Celestine Ukwu - Ije Enu

Celestine Ukwu’s classic Igbo highlife song “Ije Enu” was first released in 1971 on his critically acclaimed album True Philosophy. Accompanied by his band, the Philosophers National, Ukwu delivered a timeless masterpiece that has since become a cornerstone of the highlife genre.

Meanwhile, the narrative song title “Ije Enu,” translates from the Igbo language as “life’s journey” or “the journey of life”.

Following the Nigerian Civil War, Celestine Ukwu assembled a band in 1970 and released his first album, True Philosophy, the following year. It was not until 1972 that the group was officially renamed “Celestine Ukwu and the Philosophers National”

True Philosophy showcased Ukwu’s ability to innovate, notably by incorporating a pedal steel guitar into the arrangements.
